Countryside has taken a proactive approach to sustainability on sites that goes beyond just tackling waste.

Combatting waste and managing resource use

We create communities that improve the lives of those who live in and around them. Our proactive approach to sustainability on our sites is a key part of all of our developments. 

Efficient waste reduction during and post-construction is an important starting point.

In 2018, we will be introducing new waste management procedures that will allow us to better understand our waste generation, set reduction targets, raise awareness on waste management among staff and suppliers.

We’ve also minimised our transport emissions. This was partly due to improved communications systems reducing the need for business travel. We also recognise that demand for emission-free electric cars has risen with a rise from 3,500 to 145,000 in the UK, between 2013 and 2018. We’re responding to this shift by providing electric charging points at many of our developments and increasing the availability of low emission company vehicles for our employees.

Creating ecological havens in urban and rural areas 

Efficient waste reduction and resource use is just part of a long journey. In 2017 we planted 4,754 trees to create new landscaped spaces that would complement existing natural surroundings. Our homes are increasingly designed to provide ecological benefits to new communities.

In 2017, nearly a quarter of our developments included green or brown roofs. Green roofs involve using vegetated layers on top of the standard waterproofing layer of the building.

Brown roofs replicate the environment, creating natural habitats for birds and plants.

As well as creating new habitats, these roofs reduce the impact of rainfall and reduce urban heat which can help reduce climate change. Countryside aims to create ‘places people love’, but we also care about birds and wildlife on our sites.

Enabling sustainable consumption 

Energy efficiency is an important building block in our drive towards sustainability. Our average Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) rating, used to measure energy performance of homes, is 85.45 out of 100. This high energy performance score enables customers to make savings on utility bills and emit less carbon dioxide. At our Oaklands Hamlet development in Chigwell, Essex, we are installing systems to allow the use of “grey water”. It involves reusing waste water after treatment in flushing toilets and outside taps so residents can reduce their water use. Another energy save is passive infrared (PIR) lighting and standby generators. These help us consume less energy during site closure hours. All of these initiatives reduce the carbon footprint of our construction activities. 

Destination: higher quality of life 

The journey towards greater sustainability is long and multi-faceted. It requires a lot of planning, research and supervision but the results make it all worthwhile. We are moving in the right direction – our aim is to constantly improve and innovate. We’re committed to making a difference in the community we work in and to the quality of life of our customers, who always remain our priority.
