Countryside’s transformation of the Waltham Forest Council Town Hall is shortlisted for The Pineapples’ Future Place Award
We are pleased to announce that Phase 2 of our Fellowship Square Place scheme, in partnership with the London Borough of Waltham Forest and Metropolitan Workshop, has been shortlisted at The Pineapples’ Awards which celebrate the very best in placemaking.
The prestigious Future Place Award recognises a masterplan, planning action or design proposal for a future place that seeks to foster community, welcome visitors and attract tenants, as well as contributing to urban life and encouraging people to dwell, live, work, connect, learn and play.
Phase 2 of Fellowship Square Place, is an ambitious regeneration scheme that will transform the Walthamstow Town Hall campus into a new neighbourhood and cultural hub in the heart of the borough.
Named Hepworth Place after Philip Dalton Hepworth, the architect of the original Town Hall built in 1938, the new community will provide 433 high-quality homes prioritised for local people – of which 50% will be affordable - a brand new civic building with café and restaurant space opening onto Fellowship Square, new landscaped gardens and play facilities on Chestnuts Field, as well as a new nursery and new commercial space.
Hepworth Place addresses the climate emergency declared by the London Borough of Waltham Forest by being car-free, providing 815 secure cycle spaces, planting over 200 new trees, providing renewable energy through PV panels and a Communal Heating system, and by delivering landscaping that promotes biodiversity and mitigates flooding.
The regeneration will also drive economic recovery, bringing hundreds of new jobs to the area during construction, as well as nearly 160 additional jobs from new commercial and community uses. A programme for local schools and colleges will also be set up to learn about apprenticeship and training opportunities.
We are proud to have been shortlisted for this prestigious award, gaining recognition for the impact the regeneration scheme will have on this iconic site, delivering much needed and sustainable new homes, facilities, and jobs for the community of Waltham Forest.
