Beam Park receives double shortlisting at the Planning Awards 2020

BeamPark

Beam Park, the £1bn regeneration scheme in Rainham, Essex, that is being delivered by Countryside and L&Q, has been shortlisted twice in the Planning Awards 2020.

The development has been shortlisted in both the ‘Planning Permission of the Year’ and the ‘Best Use of Publicly-Owned Land’ categories.

The Planning Awards, which incorporate the Placemaking Awards and the Regeneration & Renewal Awards, reward excellence in professional planning work, as well as related activities such as placemaking, urban design, economic development, housing, regeneration, legal advice, environmental consulting and property development.

Through a masterplan designed by architects Patel Taylor, Beam Park is transforming a former Ford manufacturing plant into a new and vibrant destination spanning 29-hectares and comprising 3,000 new homes, of which 50% will be affordable. In addition, the site will have extensive facilities including a proposed new c2c railway station, two schools, retail spaces, a gym, a nursery, a multi-faith centre and two state-of-the-art energy centres.

The project is a significant collaboration between public and private sector bodies to accelerate housing delivery for two London boroughs; the GLA-owned site stretches across Barking and Dagenham to the west and Havering to the east. Beam Park will be an inclusive neighbourhood that reflects the rhythm and diversity of East London on a large, highly constrained and complex site.

In addition to the homes, the first phase of the development will see the delivery of a three-form-entry primary school, alongside a new linear park which will include play areas for children and serve as an exciting community space for residents. 44% of the development has been allocated for publicly accessible green space, which includes a three-hectare central park in the heart of the development with the River Beam running through it.

This double shortlisting is testament to the high quality of the design at Beam Park, and we are looking forward to celebrating with other industry professionals at the awards ceremony on 24 September at The Mermaid London.
