Top tips: Hosting the perfect picnic

From romantic tête-a-têtes in grand surroundings to gatherings with friends in the park or something to do in the garden to keep the kids entertained, the picnic is as versatile as it is enjoyable. Here are our top tips to take your picnic to the next level…

Get the right equipment: The picnic blanket is the backdrop to your gathering so make sure you’ve got one that’s the right size, sets the right tone through its design, and has a waterproof backing – we are in Britain after all! A wicker picnic hamper set brings a traditional touch to the proceedings and often includes appropriate cutlery, crockery and glasses. Alternatively, tiffin tins can be both practical and beautiful, and a cool bag or box will help keep food and drinks fresh.

Plan the menu: Picnics don’t have to mean boring sandwiches. The internet is awash with recipes for adventurous salads, while olives, cured meats, interesting cheeses, crudites and dips can make a picnic feel more of an occasion. If you’re going for a bring-and-share format, make sure you coordinate with guests to avoid duplication.

Pick the perfect place: This could be a good opportunity to discover a new spot, or if you want to avoid carrying all of your food and equipment to a different destination, keep it local and find a sunny patch in your local park, or even your back garden so those home comforts are just a few steps away.

Sun and shade: Aim to choose an area near a tree that will offer both sun and shade to your guests, so that you can cater to all requirements.

Decorate: Decoration doesn’t have to start and end with your picnic blanket. Consider bunting, jamjars of flowers if you’ll be using a picnic table, and – if your picnic will be going on into the evening - hanging solar or tealight lanterns in the trees nearby.

Get comfortable: If you can, providing cushions, blankets or bean bags for your guests will ensure they stay comfortable and can relax for the duration of the picnic. Aim to keep a consistent style, although a boho, festival-style, anything-goes vibe will work well.
