Magical Moments: Top festive things to do in Bath

The Georgian city of Bath is beautiful in all seasons but is particularly special at Christmas time. With sparkling lights adorning its streets and festive spirit in the air, the holidays are the perfect time to pay a visit.
From exploring the world-famous Bath Christmas market and indulging in some retail therapy, treating yourself at its abundance of independent shops and eateries, to taking in the magical city illuminations, you’ll never be short of ways to enjoy Bath this festive season.
Lose yourself in the Christmas markets
Bath Christmas market will return for its 20th anniversary this year. Boasting over 150 stalls, it is the perfect place to enjoy a spot of leisurely Christmas shopping. With a range of artisan products on display, from decorations and homeware, to handcrafted jewellery, you’ll be spoilt for choice as you search for unique gifts, all the while supporting small businesses and local producers based in the South West.
Eat, drink and be merry
Bath is home to a fantastic food scene and its range of restaurants and cafés will have all sorts of special seasonal menus on offer, perfect to warm you up on a winter’s day. Enjoying a hearty Sunday roast in front of a fire at a traditional British pub will be sure to get you in the festive spirit.
The Apres-Ski Bar at Abbey Hotel on North Parade is a highlight for locals in the run-up to December 25th and certainly not one to be missed. Enter the pop-up chalet and you’ll feel as though you’ve been transported to the Alpine mountains as you enjoy mulled wine amongst the lodge décor and festive music.
Get your skates on
Bath on Ice is back for its tenth year this Christmas. Located in Royal Victoria Park, close to the iconic Royal Crescent, you can combine your ice skating with a trip to Bath’s Christmas markets, just a short walk away.
Those less keen on taking to the ice can still enjoy being whisked away to a dreamy winter wonderland as they watch from the side lines with a cup of hot chocolate.
Culture at Christmas
Steeped in history, Bath has a whole host of interesting museums to explore, including the Holburne Museum, the Jane Austen Centre and No. 1 Royal Crescent. If visiting during the festive period, you’ll be able to make the most of the seasonal exhibitions and displays on offer.
Whilst visiting, why not take the time to explore the picturesque grounds that surround Bath’s historic buildings. You certainly won’t want to miss the trail of illuminations that will guide you through the spectacular grounds of the American Museum & Gardens as the Enchanted Garden of Light returns for its second year.
Dazzling decorations
One of the UK’s prettiest cities, Bath never looks better than when it’s decorated for the festive season. A festive trip to the city isn’t complete until you’ve seen the giant Christmas tree outside Bath Abbey. At the heart of the bustling city centre, you won’t want to miss the carol services and music taking place outside the Abbey, creating a truly wonderful atmosphere. You can even look inside the historic Abbey itself which offers a special Festive Tower Tour where you can see views of the city from above.
Seeing Bath light up and sparkle will no doubt make you fall in love with the city. If you’re hoping to start 2023 somewhere new, Countryside’s Sulis Down development, located on the southern edge of Bath, could be just what you’re looking for.
