Garden towns and villages – places designed with communities in mind

As access to nature and sustainability increasingly become front of mind among home buyers, garden towns and villages have never been more appealing.

Designed and built to a high standard, they are created to meet local housing needs, incorporating a host of community facilities essential for comfortable day-to-day life. These communities enable residents to enjoy the best of both worlds – plenty of open green space right on their doorstep as well as easy access to good transport links into London and beyond.

Countryside’s new garden village project – Ashmere, part of Whitecliffe, the largest development in Ebbsfleet Garden City, formally known as Eastern Quarry, will see the creation of 2,000 mixed-tenure homes in partnership with Clarion Housing Group.

Set against the dramatic white cliffs synonymous with the Kent area, the new community will feature a country park, a lake and expansive open green spaces throughout the village, encouraging local residents to spend time outdoors.

Thanks to the landscape-led approach to design, the new community will benefit from a visually appealing, harmonious look. Current plans include a provision for a new primary school and a village centre where residents can relax and socialise.

Ashmere is located a short drive from Ebbsfleet, which runs regular services to London St Pancras, making it an ideal choice for commuters. The area benefits from a network of local buses, roads and trains.

As part of the project, a number of new walking and cycling routes will be created to incentivise people to use alternative means of transport, in line with the government’s commitment to make cycling the natural choice for short-distance journeys.

At Countryside, we understand the ingredient needed to cultivate successful garden towns and villages. In 1993, we started working on Great Notley Garden Village in Essex. Following its completion in 2017, it comprises 2,000 new homes, as well as a 500,000 sq. ft employment park, a 100-acre country park with amphitheatre and wide-ranging community facilities.

This award-winning development is made up of three distinct neighbourhoods, each with its own distinct style, showing Countryside’s expertise in delivering homes with character and on a scale that enables the community to function self-sufficiently.

Countryside prides itself on creating communities, not just houses, and this approach to housebuilding informs every single aspect of its developments, designed to help people connect with one another and nature.
