In Conversation with… Blue Bean Coffee

Countryside caught up with Sam Bott, the founder of Blue Bean Coffee, Kent-based coffee roasters who are coming soon to Ashmere, Countryside’s new development in the heart of Ebbsfleet Garden City, Kent.

What does Blue Bean Coffee do?

We specialise in coffee roasting. What sets us apart from many other companies in this space is our commitment to the environment – we use convection roasting which requires up to 80% less electricity than the conventional method developed in the 1920s- 1930s. A lot has changed since then, and today many processes are computer-controlled which helps minimise waste and enhance flavour.

Our coffee is then packaged into omni-degradable packaging, which breaks down in any environment it’s put into, which allows us to reduce our environmental impact.

We supply wholesale customers, such as hotels, restaurants and coffee shops. In addition, we operate our own coffee boxes, like the one currently in place at Ebbsfleet International station, near Ashmere, where we sell take-away coffee and pastries to busy commuters.

How did you get into coffee roasting?

I got into coffee roasting back in 2007, inspired by a friend who was already in this business. I originally invested in coffee roasters and then set up my own company, Blue Bean Coffee, in 2014 to oversee the entire process.

We work with coffee brokers who help us source the best coffee beans from all over the world, including Brazil, Kenya and Guatemala. Blue Bean Coffee typically offers six different types of coffee at any given time, which means our customers always get a good range to choose from depending on their preferences.

What’s the best thing about living and working in Kent?

I was born and raised in Kent and now live just 10 minutes away from Ebbsfleet Garden City, which is why we opened our first coffee box there. The best thing about living here is accessibility – the rolling hills of the countryside are just a stone’s throw away, and you also have Bluewater Shopping Centre nearby which has just about everything you need. Ebbsfleet is well connected to London both by train and road, which is convenient given I’m constantly on the move meeting clients and partners.

What are your plans for the near future?

As the world goes back to normality, we look forward to seeing more of our customers at Ebbsfleet station and continue supplying our long-standing partners.

Our coffee roasting business has been growing at a steady pace, and we’re on the lookout for new team members, who share our passion for great taste and responsible approach to the environment.

We are launching a pop-up coffee box at Ashmere at the end of July, which means the first residents moving in in September will be able to enjoy delicious coffee, soft drinks and a selection of freshly baked pastries right on their doorstep. Watch this space!
